The annual award exhibition for portraiture by contemporary Australian women artists. The award, which was first given in 1965 in memory of the artist Portia Geach, displays selected entries from artists across the nation representing diversity in contemporary portraiture. The award is recognised as one of the most important celebrations of the talents and creativity of Australian female portrait painters and has played a major role in developing the profile of the nation’s women artists.

Public programs are FREE with exhibition entry

Sunday, 6 November 3pm

Cynthia Breusch & Tianli Zu will discuss their fascinating self portraits which explore bird & flight as metaphors of the human condition.


Sunday, 13 November 3pm

Mirra Whale & Natasha Walsh will discuss their interesting self-portraits. Both were finalists in 2016 Archibald Prize, while Natasha's work was highly commended  in the Portia Award as well.


Sunday, 20 November  3pm

 Camillia Morris, Alex Thorby & Ioulia Ourovskaia have portrayed well known people for their entries: an art dealer, an artist and an actress. They'll discuss the difficulties of capturing the characteristics and nuances of creative and successful people.


Sunday, 4 December 3pm

Sally Anderson has painted successful artist, Guy Maestri, who has won the Archibald Prize and been a finalist in the Wynne and numerous other Prizes; while Kim Leutwyler has painted the Lord Mayor of Sydney since 2004, Clover Moore, who won another successful election against the Liberals and other Independents in 2016.


Sunday, 11 December 3pm

Matilda Michell, & Rachael Milne have painted self-portraits in a contrasting manner while using similar media; and Kate Gradwell & Lucy West-Sooby have painted male-subjects using similar media again but taken different approaches.
